If You Build It, They Won’t Come

Sketch of a tree with deep roots and ideas hanging around it

Kevin Costner plowed under his corn, built a baseball field, and dead ballplayers walked out of the stalks to play on it.

That’s a movie. A good one. It is not a business plan.

But I watch women run it like one all the time. They sign the lease. They agonize over paint for three weeks. They order the custom mugs. They cut the ribbon, the chamber snaps a photo, and then they stand behind the counter and wait for the corn to rustle.

It doesn’t rustle.

Here’s what nobody says at the ribbon cutting: marketing a new business starts the day you open, not the day you feel ready. Open doors just mean people can come in. It doesn’t mean they know you exist.

Nobody is driving past your shop thinking about your shop. They’re thinking about dinner, their kid’s permission slip, and whether that noise the car is making is a big deal. They’re busy as hell. You are not on their list. Your job is to get on the list.

That means the boring stuff. A Google Business Profile that’s actually filled out, with photos that aren’t blurry. A website that says what you sell and where you are, in plain English, before anyone has to scroll. A reason for someone to tell a friend. A way to stay in touch with the people who walked in once.

None of it is as fun as picking paint. All of it matters more.

I’ve watched beautiful shops close fast because the owner thought the work ended when the build did. And I’ve watched a folding table at the farmers market turn into a storefront because the woman behind it never once stopped telling people she was there.

The field doesn’t bring anybody. You do.

So here’s your dare. Before you spend another dollar on the space, write down how your next ten customers are going to find out you exist. If you can’t name it, that’s your project this week.

The mugs can wait.
