Stay in the Dough

Sketch of people around a funnel filtering ideas

Picture the baker.

She’s up at 4 a.m. She knows what humidity does to a croissant. She ruined a hundred loaves figuring out her starter, and she has opinions about butter that could end a dinner party. She reads about flour. For fun.

Nobody walks into her shop and says, “I watched a video, I’ll take the ovens from here.”

But that’s exactly what you do with your marketing. Or your books. Or your website. Fill in the blank.

You tell yourself DIY marketing saves money. It doesn’t. You’re losing money, just quietly, so it doesn’t feel like losing.

Every hour you spend fumbling through ad settings is an hour you’re not doing the thing people actually pay you for. And at the end of that hour you have one Instagram post and no idea whether it worked.

Posting is not the same as knowing what the hell you’re doing.

The expert knows, because she lives in it every day, the way the baker lives in the dough. She’s already made the mistakes. She read about the update you didn’t know happened. She tested the thing so you don’t have to pay for the lesson.

You don’t have time to learn all that. You definitely don’t have the money to learn it the hard way.

I know the voice in your head. “I can’t afford help.” Honey, you’re already paying for it. In lost hours, in posts that go nowhere, in customers who never found you.

And no, hiring someone doesn’t mean handing over your business. A good one builds it, explains it, and gives you the keys.

So stay in your lane. Get stupidly good at the thing you love. Then listen to the people who live in the other lanes. Actually listen. Advice only works if you take it.

The baker doesn’t do her own taxes. She has a guy.

Your dare: write down three things eating your week that aren’t your actual job. Next to each one, write what an hour of your real work is worth.

Then tell me DIY is cheaper.
